Background: |
The capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka, home to 18 million people and facing rapid population growth, is grappling with severe traffic congestion, prompting the Bangladesh Bridge Authority to embark on a project to construct an approximately 87 km Elevated Expressway in the northern part of the city through a Public Private Partnership, aiming to alleviate congestion with eight lanes, including dedicated emergency lanes, marking a significant milestone in Bangladesh's infrastructure development, following a memorandum of understanding signed between the Public Private Partnership Authority and Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development in April 2019.
|
Objective: |
Ensure better connectivity between the capital and Mymensingh division, where 10 economic zones will be established.
|
Project Purpose: |
The purpose of the project includes upgrading the existing 4-lane Joydebpur-Mymensingh road stretch into a controlled access highway with a minimum of 4 traffic lanes and 2 emergency lanes in both directions, improving road geometry for high design speeds of preferably 100 km per hour, enhancing road pavement for increased traffic longevity, constructing service roads for segregating slow-moving and local vehicles, installing underpasses/overpasses for safe cross-movement and pedestrian crossings, building interchanges at busiest intersections, establishing toll plazas, axle load control stations, and rest/service areas, widening existing bridges/culverts as necessary, installing crash barriers, fencing for access control, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) facilities for efficient traffic management, traffic control stations for monitoring road operations, and noise barriers where necessary.
