Narayanganj is located near the capital city Dhaka which is one of the busiest commercial and industrial hubs of Bangladesh. The population of the city is about 2 million with an area of 72.43 sq km. Everyday, a good number of people commute in daytime for work in the city. The city generates significant numbers of freight traffic from industrial clusters such as BSCIC industrial area, AEPZ, and Mondaganj industrial hub. Moreover, approximately 81% outbound Narayanganj traffic travels to Dhaka for their daily activities. Experiencing traffic jam is common for the city dwellers due to the lack of standard public transport system and dependency on non-motorized transport. The existing rail system (single track rail system) is also inadequate.
In this backdrop, Narayanganj city corporation has conceptualized a light rapid transit system for Narayanganj city with overall LRT length approximately 10km and with total station of maximum 20. It is estimated that the project will cater for approximately 1,30,000 number of daily traffic.
