Water, Wastewater and sanitation standards have deteriorated in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) due to unregulated industrial expansion, unplanned urbanization, encroachment of the rivers and overloading of infrastructures. In Tongi Zone (32.76 sq. Kms), consisting of 15 wards and Gazipur Zone (47.87 Sq. Km), consisting of 8 wards, are provided with piped water supply. There is no surface water source and all water is estimated in the range of 40-50 liters per capita per day (LPCD). Piped supply is supplemented by alternate sources, mainly public and private Tube wells (TWs).
Arrangements for sanitation facilities at the GCC are undertaken privately, even at household levels, by means such as sanitary latrines and pit latrines. GCC, with a focus on improving public infrastructure for wastewater management in GCC. Tongi and Gazipur Zones have been identified as needing immediate intervention.
